From the chill of the Arctic to the urban city vibe – Discover Finnair employees’ and customers’ top travel tips for early 2025
Wondering where to go in January, February, or March? Whether you're seeking winter adventures, cultural experiences, or unique food festivals, a perfect winter destination is waiting for you. In this article, we’re sharing the top 2025 travel ideas Finnair’s employees and customers recommended for an unforgettable start to the year: Kittilä, Reykjavik, and London.
January: Kittilä
January is the perfect time to experience Lapland in the heart of winter and marvel at the northern lights. After the New Year, the days gradually lengthen, and Kittilä offers a more peaceful atmosphere than the busy Christmas or ski holiday periods. National Ski Day, held on January 19, 2025, brings fun outdoor events to Levi.
“I wholeheartedly recommend Kittilä, as it is a gateway to countless activities throughout the year. Visit the fells, enjoy the seasonal colours and weather, and immerse yourself in the local culture. The Ylläs and Levi areas offer an authentic taste of Lapland, and Kittilä is an excellent base for all outdoor activities.
One of the highlights of Kittilä is its versatility. Explore the Särestöniemi Museum and its fascinating art, hike the rugged landscapes of Ylläs’ Pirunkuru, or test your skiing skills on Levi Black, one of Finland’s most challenging slopes. If you’re craving a slower pace, head to a cosy café along the ski tracks, or take a longer trek through national parks to experience the quiet and peace of Lapland’s nature.”

February: Reykjavik
Foodies, here’s your sign to travel to the capital of Iceland in February: Þorrinn (or Thorri) is Iceland’s culinary month honouring the country’s ancient customs and food culture. It usually runs from late January to mid-February. This ancient Viking tradition has been a part of Icelandic culture for centuries, and many restaurants offer traditional local dishes during this time. In Reykjavik, you can take part in Þorrablót feasts, where you can sample Icelandic delicacies like hákarl (fermented shark), skyr, and blóðmör (blood pudding) while enjoying folk music and traditional dances.
In early February, Reykjavik also hosts the Winter Lights Festival, which illuminates the streets with light and photography art, hosts concerts and theatre performances, and offers other cultural experiences.
“Iceland is a magical country, full of natural wonders. Hot springs, lagoons, glaciers, and waterfalls provide unforgettable experiences. The unique nature always fascinates me and keeps me coming back. Reykjavik is a compact city that is easy to explore, even quickly, especially if you choose to stay there.
The Diamond Beach, shown in the photo, is a fantastic experience next to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. On the volcanic black sand, chunks of ice glitter like diamonds in the sun. You can also ride a boat through the blue icebergs at the nearby Glacier Lagoon. Day trips to these areas often depart from Reykjavik, with stops to admire waterfalls and other stunning natural sights.”

March: London
March is an ideal time to visit London, with various events celebrating culture, sports, and food. London is also one of the best places to experience the lively atmosphere of St. Patrick’s Day. On March 16, 2025, London will host a grand St. Patrick’s Day Parade, followed by a festival with Irish food stalls, music, and dance.
“London is a city full of experiences, captivating visitors with diversity and offering unforgettable moments for everyone. Some of my favourite places in London include Buckingham Palace, the British Museum, and the Sky Garden, where you can enjoy stunning views over the entire city. The bustling shopping streets of Oxford Street and the atmospheric lanes of Piccadilly Circus offer fantastic shopping and easy access to other fascinating locations by public transportation.
Harry Potter fans will find magical experiences in London, like the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, where you can go behind the scenes of the films. You can also visit filming locations like Diagon Alley and Leadenhall Market. In March, you can even catch a live Harry Potter play.
It’s easy to fall in love with London on a short city break, but its charm will keep you returning for more. I’ve been twice and can confidently say this vibrant city will call me back!”
