Safe travels start with you – this is how you can make flights comfortable for all

While most travellers set a great example, studies tell us that unruly behaviour is on the rise . Together, we can create a safe journey everyone can enjoy. Ready for a smoother flight? Put your phone, and yourself, in airplane mode and follow these 10 simple tips!

1. Wear your safety belt whenever you’re seated

Your  seatbelt is more than just a requirement during takeoff and landing, it’s a vital safety measure throughout your entire flight. For your safety, always keep it fastened during takeoff and landing and whenever you’re seated, or the seatbelt sign is on. Turbulence can occur without warning, even in a seemingly smooth sky, and wearing your seatbelt minimises the risk of injury to you and others around you. Standing up or moving around increases the risk of injury – not just to you but to those around you as well.

And what if the seatbelt doesn’t fit? Just ask our friendly cabin crew, and they’ll provide a seatbelt extender so you can relax and enjoy the flight.

2. Listen to the instructions of our crew

Our cabin crew’s instructions are designed to protect you and everyone on board. And while they might seem routine, they are crucial in managing both expected and unexpected situations. Our crew is well-trained to handle various situations and tasks, and by listening and cooperating, you contribute to a smooth and safe flight. Remember, every announcement and instruction has a purpose, and know that your attentiveness and cooperation play an important role in everyone’s journey.

3. Stay calm in unexpected situations

Unexpected challenges, such as delays or disruptions, can occur during your journey. While these moments can be frustrating, your composure allows our team to focus on resolving the situation efficiently. In case of a disruption, we’ll notify you directly via SMS and/or email so please make sure your contact details are up to date in Manage booking. Keep an eye on the Finnair app, and during the flight, stay informed with important updates in the IFE and Nordic Sky portal

By staying calm and making use of available resources, you’re helping to create a safer and more pleasant journey for everyone.

4. Drink responsibly (we recommend our blueberry juice)

Leisure travelling is often related to a special occasion – a holiday, a long-anticipated adventure or maybe a special anniversary. Toasting to these moments is perfectly fine but remember that moderation is key.

At a higher altitude, alcohol affects the body more quickly than on the ground, so staying aware of your limits is especially important. Safety is our first priority, and with a clear mind, you're always alert and ready to act, even in rare scenarios like evacuations.

If you’re looking for alternatives, we offer a wide selection of mocktails and nonalcoholic beverages for you to enjoy. And, of course, our beloved blueberry juice is always a great option!

Please remember that our aircraft operate as licensed spaces, meaning consuming your own alcohol is not permitted. To ensure a safe flight for all, we need to confirm you're both physically and mentally fit to fly. If you're severely intoxicated, we may deny you boarding.

5. Planning a long-haul flight with little ones? Read this first!

If you’re travelling with small children, it’s important to plan accordingly, especially if you travel Business Class on our long-haul flights. Our AirLounge seats feature a fixed frame, which means you won’t be able to reach your child from another seat when the seatbelt sign is on. Additionally, these seats don’t support child seats, so children must be able to sit independently for the whole flight and wear a regular seatbelt. Keep in mind that each seat is designed for one person only, except for infants under two years of age who can be held on a lap. If a child is unable to sit in their AirLounge seat and use the safety belt properly, our cabin crew might need to move the child and their parent to another travel class.

Our Premium Economy Class is a great alternative when travelling with small children on long-haul flights.

6. Don’t smoke on board

It’s been decades since ashtrays were a staple on flights, and today’s smoke-free cabins ensure that all passengers can breathe easily on board. Smoke can compromise the air quality in the cabin, trigger smoke detectors and create unnecessary safety hazards.

Smoking of any kind, including electronic cigarettes, is strictly prohibited on board and will always lead to disciplinary actions. By respecting the no-smoking policy, you’re contributing to an enjoyable and safe experience for all.

7. Capture your journey – with a permission

Travelling is filled with exciting moments and capturing them helps you preserve the memories for years to come. Whether it’s snapping photos of the view from your window or recording your experience on board, it’s wonderful to document the journey.

Please remember that not everyone around you may want to be part of the spotlight. Your fellow travellers value their privacy, and our crew is focused on ensuring a safe and comfortable flight. If you’d like to include someone in your photos or videos, always ask for their permission. It’s a small courtesy that goes a long way!

8. Keep your pet comfy in their own spot

We welcome pets that weigh less than 8kg together with their container in our cabins, but just like us, they also have a set of rules to follow. While it might be tempting to snuggle your pet midflight, it’s important they stay in their container under the seat in front of you throughout the flight. We recommend a warm familiar blanket, a favourite toy and feeding your pet well in advance for a comfortable flight. The belly scratches and cuddles will need to wait until you reach your destination but knowing they’re safe and settled will make the journey smoother for you both.

9. Pack according to your ticket type

By following the baggage rules of your ticket type and bringing only the essentials, you’ll make your travel experience more hassle-free. Excessive carry-on baggage can slow down boarding, as oversized bags must be stored in the hold at an added cost. It’s much easier to organise your baggage at home than scramble to adjust it at the airport!

Remember that small bags should always go under the seat in front of you. This leaves room for larger carry-on bags in the overhead bins and helps us all get off the ground quickly.

10. Treat our crew and your fellow travellers with kindness

It might seem obvious but it’s always worth saying – treat everyone around you with kindness and respect. Our crew is here to make your flight as smooth and safe as possible, and your fellow passengers are just like you, on their way to the same destination. A little bit of patience and understanding goes a long way in making the journey enjoyable for everyone. Let’s work together to create a flight experience where kindness is the rule, not the exception.
