Consuming less

Reducing the CO2 emissions of flying is rightfully at the heart of our sustainability work. On the other hand, we cannot ignore the other environmental impacts of our business since sustainability is more than emissions. It is the key driver in decisions regarding all our operations, from product design to partnerships.

Among other efforts, this means reducing the use of single-use plastics, making use of materials that have good recycling qualities, and reducing waste from our operations.

For example, we use digital services to reduce the amount of printed material on board. Our food and beverage menu offers vegetarian options. Our cabin items are designed to be as light as possible and, last but not least, we seek to reduce waste both onboard and in our own operations.

We communicate about our sustainability actions openly and invite you to make choices that can reduce the environmental impact of flying. Such choices include choosing the shortest route, combining flying with other modes of transportation, packing light, pre-ordering your meal, and tailoring your journey so that we can reduce all excess.

Finnair halved the amount of single-use plastic

In spring 2018, Finnair Kitchen assessed the total amount of single-use plastic generated in flight operations and set an ambitious goal of halving plastic waste by the end of 2022. The goal was reached in August 2022. However, the development doesn’t stop here – the plan is to make operations and recycling even more efficient.
