A new era for Finnair Plus starts in 2024 – we’ve answered some common questions

Finnair Plus entered a new era on 9 March 2024. Our loyalty program is now spend-based, which means you reach tiers and collect loyalty currency based on the money spent on flights and travel extras with Finnair. We have also introduced Avios as our new loyalty currency and brought new benefits to our members.

You can read more about our renewed program here. In this article, we have collected answers to the most frequent questions our members have asked.

What does loyalty currency mean?

Loyalty currency in Finnair Plus refers to the currency you collect based on your purchases. With the currency you can, for example, purchase flights and travel extras.

We adopted Avios as our new loyalty currency on 9 March 2024 and all Finnair Plus members’ award points were converted to Avios.

What are the new tier point limits?

We revised the tier point limits required to reach different tiers to reflect the new spend-based earn of tier points. The new tier limits are:

  • Finnair Plus Silver – 15,000 tier points
  • Finnair Plus Gold – 45,000 tier points
  • Finnair Plus Platinum – 80,000 tier points
  • Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo – 300,000 tier points (with at least 250,000 collected from Finnair).

What are the new and updated member benefits?

We have brought new benefits to our members and updated some of the existing ones.

Improved digital customer service for top-tier members:

  • We improved Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members’ digital customer service in October 2023. All Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can now use priority chat service both in the Finnair mobile app and online. WhatsApp service was also opened to Gold members.

Internet connections:

  • On 1 November, we introduced a new benefit, a Message package, which is a complimentary internet connection for messaging for all Finnair Plus members on European flights operated with our A321, A320, and A319 aircraft.
  • On 1 February 2024, Finnair Plus Gold and Platinum members’ 30-minute Browse package were updated to a 30-minute Stream package on short-haul flights operated with the Airbus A319, A320 and A321 aircraft.
  • Starting from 1 February all Finnair Plus members have been able to purchase Browse-package for long-haul flights and Stream-package for short-haul flights with a special members-only discount.

More seats for award flights:

  • We added more award seats and guarantee at least 4 award seats on Finnair flights within Europe and 8 on Finnair long-haul flights. All Finnair Plus members can book these seats.

Milestones:

  • On 9 March 2024, we launched a new benefit called milestones for all Finnair Plus members. Milestones allow you to unlock valuable rewards when you reach a milestone's tier point limit. Each tier has its own milestones, and you can collect milestone rewards only from your own membership tier. If you did pass the milestone limit, before 9 March, we don’t reward you with the milestone reward during the ongoing tracking period.

Simplified upgrade benefits:

  • Instead of separate long-haul and European upgrade benefits, we have just one type of upgrade benefit. The required number of upgrade benefits will vary between long-haul and short-haul flights and the travel class. Finnair Plus Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can use their existing upgrade benefits for European and long-haul flights as before until they expire. You will receive new upgrade benefits when your tracking period starts again after 9 March 2024.

Did my tier change when Finnair Plus entered the new era?

On 9 March 2024, we converted your tier point balance with a 3:2 ratio to correspond to the new tier limits. This means that for example, 30 000 tier points have been converted to 20 000 tier points. After the conversion, you maintained the tier you were on at the time or reached a higher tier. Your tier will be reviewed again at the end of your ongoing tracking period.

Has my tracking period changed?

Your tracking period stays as it is. There are no changes to Finnair Plus members’ tracking periods.

For example, if your tracking period currently ends on 31 May 2024 your next tracking period will start on 1 June 2024 as usual.

How do I collect tier points and Avios from flights booked in autumn 2023 for summer 2024?

When flying on a flight operated and marketed by Finnair, you collect tier points and Avios based on the ticket type or booking class and the region. You can find the updated tables here.

And if you fly with our partner airlines, you collect tier points and loyalty currency based on the travel class, booking class and the distance flown in miles. Please note, that the carrier code on the ticket must be ‘MARKETING CARRIER’ and the flight operated on an aircraft of the partner in order to collect tier points and Avios. If the partner airline is not part of the oneworld alliance you will collect only Avios, not any tier points.

Can I collect tier points and Avios for flights I paid for but didn’t fly?

The rule stays the same: you can collect tier points and Avios only for your own flights. This means that you can’t collect tier points or Avios on other persons’ flights, even if you paid for them.

Do I also collect tier points based on how much money I spend?

Yes, when flying on flights marketed and operated by Finnair, you collect tier points based on how much money you spend on your flight and travel extra purchases (excluding taxes, fees, other airport and service charges and travel extra purchases made onboard the flight or in connection with an award flight).

You collect tier points from flights marketed or operated by our oneworld partner airlines based on travel class, booking class and miles flown.

You can also earn tier points with your Finnair Visa Credit card when you make purchases for at least €1,500 per month.

How do I collect Avios?

You can collect Avios:

  • From flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair based on the money spent (excluding taxes, fees (except for possible Extra fee set by the airline) other airport and service charges and travel extra purchases made onboard the flight or in connection with an award flight).
  • From flights marketed or operated by a partner airline based on travel class, booking class and miles flown.
  • From purchases made with Finnair Visa Credit card.
  • From Finnair Plus partners’ services.

Does spend-based model mean that if I buy a Finnair flight that costs 653 euros, I’ll collect 653 tier points and Avios?

When you book a flight with Finnair, you collect tier points and Avios for both flight tickets and travel extras. In addition to the base fare of the flight ticket, you collect Avios and tier points from the possible surcharge set by the airline. If there is such a surcharge included in the flight ticket, you can find it in the price breakdown of the booking path under the Taxes, fees and charges as Extra fee. Taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are deducted from the price. The remaining amount is multiplied by each tier’s own multiplier to get the number of tier points and Avios that you will collect.

For example, let’s say you book a flight that costs €653. Of the €, let’s imagine the taxes, other fees and airport and service charges are €48. This means you would deduct €653 – €48 = €605.

The remaining €605 is multiplied by your tier multiplier:

  • Finnair Plus Basic member (multiplier 6) will collect 3,630 tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Silver member (multiplier 7) will collect 4,235  tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Gold member (multiplier 8) will collect 4,840  tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Platinum member (multiplier 9) will collect 5,445  tier points and Avios
  • Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo member (multiplier 10) will collect 6,050 tier points and Avios

Can I collect Avios and tier points from Finnair bus connections to Tampere and Turku?

You can collect tier points and Avios from Finnair's partner bus services (AY9601–AY9602 and AY9605–AY9606) between Tampere or Turku and Helsinki Airport when booked as a connection for Finnair flights.

You collect tier points and Avios based on the price of the bus ticket (excluding taxes). If you purchase the bus ticket online without a connecting flight or directly from the bus driver, you will not be able to collect tier points or Avios from it.

Can I collect Avios from award flight surcharges?

Tier points and Avios can’t be collected from award flights, nor the surcharges or travel extras purchased in connection with award flights.

How many Avios do I collect per euro spent?

Every membership tier has its own multiplier, and you receive tier points and Avios, based on this multiplier when making flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair. The multiplier is the same for tier points and Avios, so you will always collect the same amount of tier points and Avios from your flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair.

Tier multipliers:

  • Finnair Plus Basic – 6
  • Finnair Plus Silver – 7
  • Finnair Plus Gold – 8
  • Finnair Plus Platinum – 9
  • Finnair Plus Platinum Lumo – 10

How many tier points and Avios do I collect if I pay for my flight tickets and travel extras in a currency other than the euro?

If you buy your flight tickets and travel extras in other currency than euro, for example, in USD, GBP, or SEK, the total amount of your purchase (excluding taxes, fees, and other airport and service charges) will be first converted to euros and then multiplied with your tier’s multiplier.

Where can I see how many Avios and tier points I will collect from Finnair flights?

If you book a flight when logged in to your Finnair Plus account, you will be able to see an estimate of how many Avios you will collect from different flights. You will see the estimates when comparing different ticket options.

The estimate doesn’t currently show tier points, but for Finnair flights, you will collect the same number of tier points. In other words, if you see that you can collect 1,500 Avios, you will also collect 1,500 tier points for that flight.

We are working on expanding this feature to other parts of the customer experience.

In the renewed Finnair Plus program, you collect Avios and tier points based on how much money you spend on flight and travel extra purchases with Finnair. Your tier affects the final number of Avios and tier points collected – the higher your tier is at the time of flying, the more Avios and tier points you collect. More specifically, your total spend is converted to Avios and tier points with a tier-specific multiplier.

Can I buy Avios?

Yes, you can buy Avios at Finnair Shop the same way as you were able to buy Finnair Plus award points.

Can I exchange Avios for tier points?

Finnair Plus members are able to exchange loyalty currency (Avios) for tier points. You are able to exchange 3 Avios for 1 Finnair Plus tier point.

The maximum amount of tier points available for exchange is based on your current tier at the time of exchange.

  • Basic and Silver members can exchange Avios for up to 7,500 tier points.
  • Gold members can exchange Avios for up to 22,500 tier points.
  • Platinum and Platinum Lumo members can exchange Avios for up to 40,000 tier points.

Please note that tier points from exchange are not considered tier points earned from Finnair flights, which is a requirement for Platinum Lumo status.

Can I transfer my Avios in my British Airways Executive Club account to my Finnair Plus account?

You can transfer your Avios between Finnair Plus and British Airways Executive Club accounts with a 1:1 ratio. Furthermore, you will be able to link your British Airways Executive Club account to your Qatar Airways Privilege Club or Iberia Plus account and transfer your existing Avios to your Finnair Plus account.

What happened to my award points when Finnair Plus adopted Avios as a new loyalty currency?

Finnair Plus entered a new era on 9 March 2024. On that day all Finnair Plus award points were converted into Avios with a 3:2 ratio. That means that, for example, 6,000 award points were converted to 4,000 Avios.

Did tier members' baggage benefits change?

No changes were made to Finnair Plus members’ baggage benefits, they remain the same as before.

Is it still possible to exchange upgrade benefits for two-for-one Classic award flights?

Yes, this benefit has not changed. You can exchange 4 upgrade benefits for two-for-one Classic award flights for scheduled Finnair flights in Economy or Premium Economy Class.

This means you can purchase award flights for two people from the Finnair Plus customer service but pay the Avios cost of an award flight for one person. Two-for-one Classic awards are only available for scheduled one-way flights and round trips operated by Finnair or Norra and must be purchased using Avios only.

Can I collect Avios and tier points with my Finnair Visa Credit card?

Yes, you can collect Finnair Plus program’s loyalty currency, Avios, with your Finnair Visa Credit card issued by Aktia. Finnair Plus Basic members collect 1,7 Avios per euro spent, and Finnair Plus Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Lumo members collect 2 Avios per euro spent.

You can also collect tier points with Finnair Visa Credit. You will earn 300 tier points when you make purchases of at least €1,500 in a calendar month.

What does it mean that you have simplified the upgrade benefits for Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo members?

Simplifying the upgrade benefits means that long-haul and European upgrade benefits are no longer separate. You can choose if you wish to use your benefits for long-haul or short-haul flights. The required number of upgrade benefits will vary between long-haul and short-haul flights and the travel class.

What is a Lounge Pass?

A Lounge Pass is a milestone benefit for Finnair Plus Silver members. Silver members can also purchase a Lounge Pass from Finnair Shop

Lounge Pass entitles to one-time lounge visit for one person at Helsinki Airport, either Finnair Business Lounge in the non-Schengen area or Finnair Lounge in the Schengen area.

You can use your Lounge Pass in connection with any Finnair flight (AY code on the ticket and flight operated by Finnair or Norra) by walking to the lounge and requesting access.
