Jama Masjid – find India’s largest mosque in Delhi.

National Museum – get an insight into India’s history. Among the museum attractions are a large collection of bronze and terracotta sculptures.

Red Fort in Delhi – with impressive 30m-high walls. A guided tour of the fort is well worth it.

India Gate – this monument was built to commemorate the thousands of soldiers who died during World War I and is a famous and much visited attraction in Delhi.

Swaminarayan Akshardham – the largest Hindu temple in the world contains beautiful sculptures and is situated in fabulous surroundings. Not to be missed.

Agra – the city best known as being the location of the famous Taj Mahal mausoleum, a pleasant excursion for visitors who want to see something outside the city.

Agra is included in the Golden Triangle along with Delhi and Jaipur and the area is a top attraction for tourists. You can reach Agra by train from Delhi in about 2-3 hours; Jaipur is slightly closer.

Delhi is a prime shopping destination for those looking for something a little different. The city has shopping malls and markets, many with locally-produced products and handicrafts. Take the opportunity to buy cheap leather and silver during your stay.

Central Cottage Industries Emporium – Delhi’s oldest and largest shopping spot for clothes, handicrafts, furniture and toys made by local craftsmen.

Rajiv Chowk (Connaught Place) – this commercial centre offers fashion boutiques, jewelry and electronic goods as well as plenty of nice restaurants. Western fashions and local products are available here.

Other modern shopping centres in Delhi are Ansal Plaza, The great India place and Select citywalk.

If you want to visit a market, the Thursday market at Dakar in Northern Delhi is recommended as well as Sarojini Nagar market. Both specialise in clothing and bargaining is welcome!

Spicy and colourful are two words often used to describe Indian cuisine. Vegetarian food is very popular, but chicken is also a regular main ingredient. As the food is usually spicy, it is often served with raita (seasoned yoghurt) or curd along with the almost obligatory naan bread.

Samosa – a fried or baked pastry, often vegetarian, and eaten as a snack.

Pakora – a snack of fried vegetables.

Chaat – savory snacks of varying kinds and tastes.

Tandoori chicken – this grilled chicken in a tasty sauce is often served with raita.

Dum Aloo – Indian deep-fried spicy potatoes in a tasty sauce.

Dal – a lentil stew with spiced legumes.

Naan bread – served with most dishes, often instead of rice.

Vindaloo – a spicy curry dish of marinated pork or poultry.

Chai – a sweet tea, often served in small bowls made of clay.

Lassi – Indian yoghurt drink that is available in flavors like chocolate, apple and cinnamon.

Beer – a large variety of beers

Taxi and three-wheeled taxi mopeds in Delhi – an inexpensive and easy way to get around the city. Remember to agree on the price beforehand.

Delhi’s subway – an inexpensive option but note that the metro does not serve the entire city.
