Wheelchairs and other mobility aids
Before your travel
You can bring both electric and manual wheelchairs and other mobility aids on our flights. We handle them carefully throughout your journey.
If you are bringing a wheelchair or other mobility aid on your flight, let us know at least 48 hours before your flight departure. Also, let us know if you need assistance services. You can inform us about your wheelchair or other mobility aid through our special assistance form or customer service. You can track the status of your request in Manage booking.
Maximum size for wheelchairs and mobility aids in the hold of the aircraft
Please note that the size of a wheelchair or mobility aid that can fit in the hold of the aircraft depends on the aircraft type. You can see the aircraft type for each flight when booking your flight or later in Manage booking or the Finnair mobile app. Additionally, the total number of large mobility aids transported in the hold, such as electric wheelchairs, may be limited based on space availability on the flight.

**The size of the door of the aircraft hold that is typically suitable for loading electric wheelchairs and other large-sized mobility aids. Please note that the maximum dimensions for a mobility aid are smaller than the door dimensions, due to the size constraints of the hold storage space.
Preparing electric wheelchairs and mobility aids and their batteries
If you have an electric wheelchair or scooter, please bring the user manual with you to ensure its proper handling. Remember to also bring any tools that may be needed to prepare the device for the flight. There are no tools available at the airports.
Remove all easily detachable parts from your mobility aid for the duration of the flight and either take them with you in your carry-on baggage or attach them securely to your device .
If your wheelchair or mobility aid has a detachable battery, please remove it for the duration of the flight. Lithium batteries can be carried with certain restrictions. The power of a detached battery must not exceed 300 watt-hours. If you have two batteries, the power of each battery must not exceed 160 watt-hours. You can ask for more information through the special assistance form.
Advance information about your wheelchair or mobility aid
Please be prepared to provide the following information when you notify us about your wheelchair or mobility aid:
- Is your wheelchair electric or manual?
- Is it foldable?
- What are its dimensions when folded, and its weight?
- For electric wheelchairs: Does it have a dry or wet battery? How is the battery removed?
- Are you traveling alone or with an assistant?
- Do you need help at the airport to move from check-in to the departure gate?
- Do you need assistance transferring from the wheelchair to your seat?
- Do you need help with stairs?
- Are you bringing any additional medical aids?
At the airport
Wheelchairs are available at all airports for use between check-in and boarding.
On most airports, you can use your own wheelchair or walker up to the departure gate. Alternatively, you can check in your mobility aid at the check-in counter and use an airport wheelchair.
Electric wheelchairs and scooters are sometimes preferred to be checked in at the check-in counter. This allows a smoother preparation of the device and its loading into the aircraft hold.

During the flight
Mobility aids and their maximum size in the cabin
You may bring necessary mobility aids, such as canes, elbow crutches or a manual foldable wheelchair, into the cabin with you in addition to the carry-on baggage allowance included in your ticket. This extra allowance is only for necessary mobility aids, not for extra baggage.
The maximum size for a mobility aid carried in the cabin is (length x width x height) 55 x 40 x 23 cm (22 x 16 x 9 inches) and weight 12 kg (26.5 lb). If your mobility aid exceeds the maximum size/weight limitations or the cabin storage space is full, it will be placed in the hold of the aircraft with no additional charge. The maximum length of canes or elbow crutches is not restricted if they fit the cabin storage space.
On our direct flights to and from the United States, operated with Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft, we may be able to store one foldable manual wheelchair in the cabin. This is available on a first-come, first-served basis. For availability, please contact the staff at the boarding gate.
Onboard wheelchair
All our flights operated with Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft are equipped with an onboard wheelchair to help you move from your seat to the lavatory during the flight. These aircraft also have one slightly larger lavatory that can accommodate the onboard wheelchair.
An onboard wheelchair is also available on our flights operated with Finnair Airbus A321, A320 and A319 aircraft, but only if requested in advance. You can request an onboard wheelchair (WCOB) for these flights at least 48 hours before departure using the special assistance form and filling your request in the “Additional information” field.
Our cabin crew will bring the onboard wheelchair to you and, if needed, escort you to the lavatory door. However, you must be able to transfer yourself to and from the wheelchair independently or with the help of your own assistant.
Lifting chair
All our Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft are equipped with an ableSling lifting chair to assist with transferring to Business Class seats. You can use the ableSling throughout your flight. Our cabin crew will provide the ableSling with instructions upon request, but you'll need your own assistants to use it. You can also bring your own lifting chair if you prefer, with no need to inform us in advance.
Seating aids
You must be able to sit in your seat with the seatbelt fastened whenever the seatbelt sign is on. Please note that the seatbelt sign may be on for extended periods, sometimes even for the entire flight.
If medically necessary, you can use your own support harness or special seat during the flight. Your assistant should know how to use your aid. The harness or seat must be a flight-approved safety device. Please confirm the suitability of your aid with us through the special assistance form at least 48 hours before your flight departure. We accept the following safety devices with advance notice:
- AMSAFE CARES Child Aviation Restraint System harness
- Firefly GoTo support seat
- Crelling Harnesses Model 27 harness
After the flight
After landing, an airport assistant will meet you with either an airport wheelchair or your own mobility aid, depending on when you checked your mobility aid in. Please note that different airport layouts may delay the delivery of your mobility aid to the arrival gate, or it may need to be re-screened after your flight. This could cause a delay in returning your aid, but we do our best to get it to you as soon as possible.
Connecting flights
If you have a connecting flight and have requested assistance, an airport assistant will meet you at the aircraft and escort you to your next departure gate. Delivery of your own wheelchair may take time, so if you have a short connection, we recommend using an airport wheelchair if possible.
