Explore Mumbai, the megacity like no other

Mumbai – once known as Bombay – is buzzing with things to do, places to go and food to savour. This metropolis of 20 million people has been India's business, film and fashion centre, where many come to make their success in different industries. It's a city of contrasts – some live in magnificent skyscrapers, while many others live in one of Asia's largest slums, Dharavi where water and power shortages are common. You will see why Mumbai's nickname is 'City of Dreams' while exploring its hustles and bustles and encountering people from all walks of life with many different dreams.

Top things to do in Mumbai

Spot the landmarks

Start from the Gateway of India, the most popular attraction for locals and tourists. Overlooking the Arabian Sea, this iconic arch monument was built in 1911 and used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance. Then take in the history and beauty of the luxurious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel nearby. Next, you can take a ferry to Elephanta Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for cave temples and a majestic statue of the Hindu god Shiva. If you want to visit more temples, head to Mahalakshmi Temple, one of the oldest temples in the city, dedicated to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Don't forget to shop for your souvenirs at Chor Bazaar, a huge flea market where you can hunt treasures among antiques and second-hand items.

Feast on street foods

Treat your taste buds to Mumbai's flavourful and colourful local dishes. From batata vada (deep-fried potato snacks with spices), bhel puri (crunchy snacks with rice, vegetables and chutney) and Bombay sandwiches to chai and lassi, take a pick from hundreds of food stalls along the busy streets and eat like a local.

Discover the world of Bollywood

Mumbai is home to Bollywood, India's largest film industry that produces over 1,000 feature films a year. How about following in the footsteps of filming locations of famous films like Slumdog Millionaire and Dhobi Ghat? Take a tour led by a local guide to learn about the history of the areas and the local way of living. Or visit the Bollywood studios to peek behind the scenes.
