Finnair offers flights from Helsinki to Alta via Kittilä five times a week from 29 March to 22 October 2026. The flights are operated with a 68-seater ATR aircraft and the flight time is 3 hours and 10 minutes. The airport is located only 5 km from the city centre and you can reach it in approximately 10 minutes by taxi or the airport bus. Sights and activities in Alta

Alta River – a central element of Alta’s charm, this river is perfect for scenic walks, picnics and even camping. Although it is considered one of the world’s best salmon rivers, only a limited number of fishing licences are distributed every year.

Alta Canyon – take in breathtaking nature views at one of Northern Europe's largest canyons, which surrounds the Alta river. Located about 45 minutes from the city of Alta by car, the scenic canyon can be explored either on foot, by bike or even from a river boat.

Alta Museum – explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring thousands of prehistoric rock carvings. In the snow-free time of the year, you can discover rock art carved and painted into stones at the outside area of the museum. In winter, you can get an insight into the region’s rich history in the indoor part of the museum where loose stone blocks featuring rock art are displayed.

Northern Lights Cathedral – marvel at the stunning architecture of this beloved landmark, designed to resemble the aurora borealis that Alta is known for. The cathedral's unique spiral shape and titanium-clad exterior make it a must-visit attraction in the city.

Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel – experience the magic of staying in a hotel made entirely of snow and ice. The igloo hotel, located at the Sorrisniva resort, is rebuilt every winter and stays open until early spring. Sorrisniva also offers year-round premium accommodation at the Arctic Wilderness lodge, as well as fine dining and wilderness experiences.

Tirpitz Museum – delve into World War II history at this museum dedicated to the German battleship Tirpitz, which was sunk near Alta in 1944. The exhibits offer a compelling look at wartime events in the Arctic region. The museum is located slightly outside of the city of Alta and can be reached by car or bus.

Sami Siida – discover the rich culture and history of the indigenous Sami people. The cultural centre and museum gives you a glimpse into Sami traditions and lifestyle. Learn about reindeer herding and traditional Sami clothing and tools.

Winter activities – embark on exciting dog sledging tours through snow-covered landscapes or experience the thrill of snowmobiling across vast white terrains. Enjoy cross-country skiing on Alta’s ski trails or explore the wilderness on snowshoe hikes.

Sights and activities near Alta

Hammerfest – visit the world's northernmost town, located about 2 hours from Alta by car. Enjoy panoramic views from Salen Hill, explore the Arctic Culture Center and learn about the town’s history at the small exhibition Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society.

Seiland National Park – discover the national park offering stunning nature views, located on Seiland island. Hike through impressive landscapes featuring glaciers, fjords and alpine peaks. Spot flower meadows and reindeer, sea eagles and other animals. You can take a ferry to the park from Alta’s boat terminal.

Øksfjord – visit the small coastal village with colourful houses set against a dramatic mountainous landscape and explore the nearby majestic Øksfjordjøkelen glacier. The village is reachable from Alta in about 1 hour and 45 minutes by car and in about 2 hours and 30 minutes by ferry.

The North Cape – the 307-meter high cliff with a plateau overlooking the Arctic Ocean makes visitors feel like they’re at the edge of the world. Admire the majestic views and visit the North Cape Hall centre, which features a restaurant overlooking the ocean, a souvenir shop in the mountain wall, a chapel and a Thai museum. You can reach the North Cape in approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes from Alta by car.  

Cruises – Alta serves as a hub for exciting cruises, with destinations such as the vibrant Tromsø or the picturesque Øksfjord. Enjoy the journey by admiring awe-inspiring fjord landscapes. If you’re lucky, you might also be able to spot some whales, the gentle giants of the ocean.
