Doha – from a pearling village to a stunning futuristic metropolis

Doha, the capital of Qatar, boasts a magnificent skyline, stunning beach promenades and enticing sand dunes.

Grown out of a pearling village on the coast of the Persian Gulf this economic and cultural centre has gone through a growth spurt at a dazzling speed. From the flourishing pearl trade at the beginning of the 20th century to the establishment of its oil and natural gas industries in the 1950s, Doha’s population exploded from 14,000 inhabitants to 650,000 in the past century.

As the capital city of one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it makes for a fascinating holiday spot with its futuristic skyline, world-class museums, luxury hotels and stunning beach promenades. Should you grow tired of the urban environment, the traditional Bedouin lifestyle and desert adventures await just a short drive away from the city. Doha is set to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Places to visit in Doha

Visit the stunning Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Wahhab – a spectacular structure that reflects classic Islamic architecture and offers a great view of the West Bay skyline. Head for a relaxing stroll on the gorgeous seafront promenade of La Corniche along Doha Bay and enjoy spectacular views of the azure waters and the city skyline. The promenade is dotted with cafés and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a delicious meal.

The Museum of Islamic Art is one of the must-see places in Doha. Situated along the Corniche promenade, the structure and grounds themselves make for a worthwhile visit with their gorgeous design. Inside the museum, you’ll find one of the vastest collections of Islamic artifacts. For a great overview of the area’s culture and history head to The National Museum of Qatar which opened in 2019.

The 300-meter-tall hotel known as The Torch Doha is the tallest among the futuristic buildings in the city and offers breathtaking views of the metropolis below. Have an unforgettable dining experience in the hotel’s revolving Three Sixty restaurant on the 47th floor.

Spice up your visit with festivals, performances and art galleries: Doha’s Katara Cultural Village offers all this and has plenty of restaurants and cafés for relaxing.

Not far from the Corniche you’ll find the bustling Souq Waqif market. This ancient Bedouin market offers great shopping opportunities and local cuisine. Adjacent to the market you’ll find the Falcon Souq, where you can see men and boys proudly carrying prized falcons on their arms and get peek into the ancient traditions of falconry.
