Things to do, see and taste right now in the USA

Are you planning to travel to one of our USA destinations? Or are you dreaming of a trip to the States, but haven’t decided your destination yet? We listed some of our favourite activities and experiences plus some practical tips to make your trip perfect in each city.

New York

  1. When to go? The best time to visit New York City is from April to June and September to early November when the weather is mild and pleasant. You'll avoid the sweltering heat of summer and the bitter cold of winter. However, Christmas lovers should also consider visiting the city during November-December.
  2. Something to do? Stroll along the High Line, a unique elevated park built on a historic freight rail line. It's a great way to see the city from a different perspective and enjoy some greenery in the urban landscape.
  3. Something to see? Visit the Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art located in Fort Tryon Park. This museum is dedicated to the art and architecture of medieval Europe and offers stunning views of the Hudson River.
  4. Hungry or thirsty? Head to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for some authentic American-Italian cuisine. Try fresh pasta with “red sauce”, a chicken parm or a pastry such as a cannolo.
  5. Practical tips? Use the subway system and invest in a MetroCard. It's the quickest way to get around the city. Also, expect to walk a lot, comfortable walking shoes are a must.

Los Angeles

  1. When to go? Los Angeles enjoys a Mediterranean climate, so it's generally pleasant year-round. However, the best time to visit is from March to May and September to November when the weather is warm but not too hot, and there's less chance of rain.
  2. Something to do? Explore the Venice Canals, a hidden gem that offers a peaceful escape from the bustling city. You can walk along the picturesque canals and admire the charming houses and bridges.
  3. Something to see? Visit the Getty Villa in Malibu, a stunning museum dedicated to ancient Greek and Roman art. The architecture and gardens are worth a visit alone.
  4. Hungry or thirsty? Try the traditional Korean BBQ in Koreatown. It's a vibrant neighbourhood with many restaurants where you can grill your meal at your table.
  5. Practical tips? Each neighbourhood in LA has its unique vibe. Explore beyond Hollywood and Santa Monica to places like Silver Lake and Downtown. Venture out of the city too and take advantage of the many hiking trails in and around the city. Runyon Canyon and Griffith Park are popular choices.

Dallas

  1. When to go? The most pleasant time to visit Dallas is in the spring and autumn when the weather is mild. Summers can be scorching, and winters very cold.
  2. Something to do? Check out the Bishop Arts District, a lively area known for its indie shops, art galleries, and eclectic eateries. It's a great place to spend a day or two just hanging out.
  3. Something to see? Visit the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It's particularly gorgeous in the spring and fall when flowers are in full bloom.
  4. Hungry or thirsty? Dallas is a hub for Tex-Mex cuisine with literally hundreds of restaurants. Be sure to try the brisket tacos or a plate of enchiladas. Wash it all down with a michelada or margarita.
  5. Practical tips? While Dallas does have public transportation, it’s not as extensive as some other cities. Renting a car is recommended. It also lets you explore the city’s surroundings, including its many famous malls and outlets.

Chicago

  1. When to go? Visit Chicago during the summer months from June to August when the weather is warmest. However, be prepared for some humidity! Finnair flies to Chicago during the summer season.
  2. Something to do? Rent a bike and ride along the Lakefront Trail. It offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline and is a perfect way to enjoy a sunny day.
  3. Something to see? Visit the Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the largest and most stunning botanical conservatories in the nation. It's a lush tropical escape within the city.
  4. Hungry or thirsty? Chicago has an interesting craft beer scene producing drinks from light IPAs to super chocolatey stouts. Many of the breweries also offer comforting bar food or have food trucks right outside for a bite to eat.

Seattle

  1. When to go? The best time to go to Seattle is during the summer months from June to August. This is when the city experiences the least amount of rainfall. Finnair flies to Seattle during the summer season.
  2. Something to do? Take a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island. The journey offers fantastic views of the Seattle skyline and Mount Rainier, and the island itself is charming with plenty of cute shops and different walking trails.
  3. Something to see? Visit the Chihuly Garden and Glass. The vibrant glass sculptures are mesmerising, especially when viewed in the natural light of the gardens.
  4. Hungry or thirsty? Enjoy some fresh seafood at the Ballard Locks, where you can watch the boats and sometimes even see salmon making their way upstream. Try a local delicacy like Dungeness crab or clam chowder.
  5. Practical tips? The residents of Seattle love outdoor activities and you should join them. Some of the activities on offer include hiking, kayaking, and biking in and around Seattle.

Miami

  1. When to go? Miami is at its best during the winter months from November to March. This is when the weather is coolest and most comfortable, without intense heat and humidity. Finnair flies to Miami during the winter season.
  2. Something to do? Explore the vibrant street art scene in the Wynwood Walls. It's an open-air museum featuring large-scale works by some of the world's best-known street artists.
  3. Something to see? Visit the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. This beautiful historic estate offers a glimpse into Miami's past with its stunning architecture and meticulously maintained gardens.
  4. Hungry or thirsty? Savour a Cuban sandwich, a delicious mix of different meats, cheese, and pickles, with a cafecito (a little coffee) in Little Havana. This is going to be as close to going to Cuba as you can get, without going.
  5. Practical tips? Miami is playfully known as “the capital of Latin America”. Don’t be surprised if Spanish or Spanglish are the only languages spoken in some shops and restaurants. Make sure you have a translation app at hand and don’t be afraid to ask for help from the locals.
